Infections are among the most common, potentially serious complications of cancer and its treatment. - CancerNetworkWith that being said, the doctors warned us from the get go that this would happen.
Let me take you back 48 hours ago... Reece started tossing and turning in the middle of the night - I knew something was up. We got the nurses to come in and they took his vitals - no temperature. He kept tossing and turning and around 2:30AM he felt really warm. We got the nurses to come in and again they took his vitals - no temperature. 4:00AM comes... once again the nurses come in and take his vitals - no temperature.
7:15AM comes and Reece was burning up. The nurse came in and this time he had a 104 temperature... little did we know this was going to be the hardest day yet (7.30.2016). They immediately started him on two antibiotics (just in case the temperature was caused by any kind of infection), gave him some tylenol for his fever, and took blood cultures to test for any kind of infections but they won't show up for 24-48 hours.
Reece stayed in bed all day fighting off his fever. With his fever, his pulse would go up (it got as high as 180), his breathing started to get really heavy, but his blood pressure was staying stable. Because his body couldn't quite drop the fever the doctors decided to bring in the ICU doctors as a precaution in case we had to go to the ICU. THIS TORE ME APART. I know the ICU isn't a scary place, but when you hear that your baby has cancer, and has no white blood cells to fight off infections due to chemo, AND NOW he starts feeling terrible to the point of ICU, your mind starts to wander.
Fast forward to this afternoon, HIS FEVER FINALLY BROKE!!! But then he develops a rash (when are we going to catch a break?!)
The doctor's came in and said the rash is probably due to a bacteria infection and to not be alarmed because his vitals are looking better even with a rash. Nighttime comes, and this time he was feeling much better. His fever was being managed with the tylenol, his heart rate was going down, breathing down, and blood pressure on point.
This morning they just came in and confirmed that the blood cultures came back positive... meaning he does have an infection... While that's super scary to hear, it's to be expected, that's why they started the antibiotics first thing. Now we are again in a waiting game... waiting to see if the bacteria being grown is covered by the antibiotics (we won't find out for another 24 hours), waiting for his fever to drop, waiting for him to get better.
Please pray that the bacteria that was found is being fought with the current antibiotics and Reece is able to get through this infection sooner than later.
Thanks again for all the support!
